INEC: Supreme Court Ruling Affects Party Eligibility, Not Individual Aspirants
INEC says the Supreme Court’s decision on the Electoral Act 2026 does not automatically disqualify individual aspirants from contesting the 2027 general elections. The commission said the ruling focuses on whether political parties meet legal requirements for membership registers and candidate nominations. The court restored provisions requiring parties to submit membership registers to INEC before primaries. Parties that fail to comply may be unable to field candidates, but the ruling does not directly remove an aspirant’s personal eligibility. INEC said it is reviewing the certified judgment after receiving complaints and enquiries from parties and aspirants. The commission also warned media organisations against declaring election results based on privately collated figures, urging them to verify election information with INEC before publication.
