Have Nigerians Learnt Any Lessons From Buhari’s Administration?
I believe Nigeria keeps repeating political mistakes because many citizens defend leaders mainly along ethnic and regional lines. During Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, some supporters dismissed criticism of insecurity, alleged abuses and poor governance because they saw him as one of their own. Now that insecurity and economic hardship are affecting northern communities more directly, many of the same issues are receiving renewed attention. This has also led to questions about why protests and public outrage were weaker when similar problems affected other parts of the country. What worries me most is that this pattern has not ended. Some people still excuse alleged corruption, intolerance and attacks on political opponents because their preferred leader or ethnic group is in power. Until Nigerians demand accountability from every government, regardless of who leads it, the country will continue to face the consequences of tribal politics.
