Ekiti Footballer Jailed for Stabbing Opponent During Match
A 22-year-old player from White Horse FC has been sentenced to one year in prison after stabbing an opponent with a broken bottle during a match at Ben Folarin pitch in Ado-Ekiti. The Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court found him guilty on two counts—assault and breach of peace—and handed down one year for assault and one month for breach of peace. He may opt to pay fines of ₦5,000 and ₦2,000 respectively. According to the prosecutor, the incident occurred on December 8 when the footballer slashed Saheed Abdulazeez of Jaydyn FC on the right cheek. The offences violate Sections 186 and 181(d) of the Ekiti State Criminal Law, 2021.
