Nigerian High Commission Media Coordinator in Ghana Resigns, Alleges Pressure Over ₦2bn Allocation
Destiny Austine Omon, the Media Coordinator at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, Ghana, has resigned effective August 27, 2026. He cited alleged pressure to stay silent on concerns raised by Nigerians, restrictions on reporting community issues and irregular payment of his stipend. In his resignation letter, Omon said he was worried about questions surrounding a reported ₦2 billion budget allocation and related issues of transparency and accountability. He said legitimate concerns affecting Nigerians in Ghana should be communicated accurately and without undue interference. The resignation follows a petition by members of the Nigerian community in Ghana seeking a detailed account of funds allocated to the High Commission. The petitioners alleged that Nigerians have had to support emergency welfare, repatriation, detention and other consular cases because the mission reportedly claimed to have no available funds. The letter did not identify those alleged to have applied pressure or provide further details on the reported budget allocation. Omon said he would support a smooth handover and remains committed to the welfare of Nigerians in Ghana.
