FCCPC Calls for Unified Rules to Protect Electricity Consumers
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has called for closer collaboration among electricity regulators as states begin to establish their own electricity markets under the Electricity Act 2023. The FCCPC said alignment between federal and state regulators is needed to protect consumers from unfair practices, prevent billing and meter-related disputes, and give investors greater confidence in the sector. At a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, the commission cited its 2024 intervention over proposed replacement of obsolete prepaid meters. It said the engagement with NERC, NEMSA and distribution companies helped address concerns about consumers being charged for meters, estimated billing and possible supply disruptions. NERC and the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission also stressed that harmonised rules would help avoid conflicting standards as decentralised electricity regulation expands across Nigeria.
