Onaiyekan Urges INEC, Political Actors to Protect Nigerians’ Choice in 2027

Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has urged INEC, political parties, candidates and security agencies to safeguard Nigerians’ right to freely choose their leaders in the 2027 general elections. Speaking in Abuja during a visit by the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development and the Council of the Wise, Onaiyekan called for compliance with electoral laws and professional, impartial conduct by security agencies. He warned that actions capable of raising tension could turn the elections into a crisis. He said INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan must protect the commission’s independence and follow practical electoral rules to deliver credible polls. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are set for March 6.
