Court Admits Recorded Statements in Alleged Coup Trial
The Federal High Court in Abuja has admitted audio-visual recordings and statements from six defendants accused of plotting a coup. The judge ruled that the defence had not shown the statements were made under torture or coercion. The defendants had challenged their admissibility, including over the absence of a lawyer during questioning and claims of prolonged detention and a missing interpreter. The defendants face charges including treason, terrorism and money laundering linked to terrorism financing. Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva is also alleged to have been involved and is listed as being at large. The allegations have not been proven in court. The trial is scheduled to continue on December 7 and 10.
