NADECO Leader Ralph Obioha Dies at 80 After Lifetime of Pro-Democracy Activism
Chief Ralph Obioha, a former federal lawmaker, businessman and prominent NADECO leader, has died at the age of 80. His family said he died on October 3, 2026. Obioha played a notable role in the pro-democracy movement that opposed military rule after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He went into exile during the Abacha era and later led NADECO activities in Canada and the United States. Before his political activism, he built businesses in banking, brewing, cement bagging and vegetable-oil production. He said his companies once employed about 2,700 Nigerians, but he lost much of the business empire during his years in exile. Earlier in 2026, Obioha declined a national honour for June 12 activists, citing insecurity and the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu. He also remained active in national debates, including arguments over the description of the January 1966 coup as an “Igbo coup.”
