Expert Urges Nigerian Traders to Build Local Manufacturing Capacity
A supply-chain expert has urged Nigerian traders to move beyond importing finished goods and invest in local production, assembly, distribution and logistics. He said the dispute involving traders and Chinese manufacturers at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex highlights how direct sales can remove middlemen and expose local businesses to lower-cost competition. While direct sourcing can reduce prices, he noted that it can also threaten jobs and businesses built around wholesale and retail trade. He called for stronger regulation, affordable financing, better infrastructure and partnerships between Nigerian traders and Chinese manufacturers. He also advised traders to form purchasing cooperatives, develop private-label products and build Nigerian-owned production capacity.
