Uba Sani Says He Still Respects Detained El-Rufai Despite Political Rift
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani says he will not publicise the private efforts he has made to support his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, who has been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2026. Speaking during a television interview, Sani said he still holds El-Rufai in high regard and has never spoken against him. He also rejected claims that he wants the former governor kept in detention until after the 2027 elections. The former allies have been publicly divided since Sani succeeded El-Rufai in 2023, with disagreements over Kaduna’s inherited debts, project contracts and political loyalties. El-Rufai has denied wrongdoing in the corruption and money-laundering allegations being investigated by the ICPC, which says his detention is backed by court orders.
