Yiaga Africa Urges Political Parties to Sanction Hate Speech and Cyberbullying

Yiaga Africa has called on political parties to enforce internal discipline against members, candidates and supporters who engage in hate speech, cyberbullying, defamation and inflammatory campaign rhetoric. The organisation said parties should adopt clear codes of conduct, define unacceptable behaviour and apply sanctions equally, regardless of a member’s status. It argued that campaign messages should focus on policies, competence and solutions to citizens’ concerns rather than personal attacks. Yiaga Africa also urged parties, security agencies and civil society groups to work together to curb online misinformation and political harassment ahead of future elections. It warned that unchecked inflammatory rhetoric can deepen divisions and weaken public confidence in democracy.
