40 Years After Dele Giwa’s Parcel-Bomb Killing, Questions Remain Unanswered
Dele Giwa, founding editor-in-chief of Newswatch magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb at his Ikeja home on October 19, 1986. He was in his study with Newswatch’s London bureau chief, Kayode Soyinka, when the package exploded. Giwa later died from his injuries. In the days before his death, Giwa had faced repeated questioning by security agencies over his reporting, alleged political activities and claims of arms importation. He had also told friends and officials that he feared for his safety after the interrogations. Accounts say the parcel bore the Nigerian Coat of Arms and was delivered to his home shortly after he spoke with a military intelligence official. No one has been held accountable for the killing. Four decades later, Giwa’s death remains a defining unresolved case in Nigeria’s media history. It continues to raise questions about press freedom, state power and accountability.
