Tinubu Says Economy Has Recovered, But Nigerians Still Face Soaring Living Costs

President Bola Tinubu told the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria that his administration has stabilised the country, recovered the economy and put prosperity within reach. But for many Nigerians, daily living costs tell a sharply different story. Food, petrol, cooking gas and other essentials remain far beyond the reach of many households. Petrol prices reportedly rose from about ₦743 in Lagos to more than ₦1,300 in some areas, while a tuber of new yam now costs between ₦2,500 and ₦8,500. With incomes swallowed by basic survival, saving has become difficult for most families. The gap between official optimism and public experience also raises questions about budget implementation. Senator Tahir Monguno reportedly said that much of the 2025 budget had been rolled into 2026 despite improved revenue performance. He questioned why capital projects and other democratic dividends are delayed if government revenues are exceeding projections. For many citizens, prosperity will be believable only when it is reflected in affordable food, energy, transport and properly implemented public projects.
