Zimbabwe Declares 15 September Public Holiday, Coinciding With Mnangagwa’s Birthday

Zimbabwe has declared 15 September an annual public holiday known as Munhumutapa Day. The date coincides with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s birthday. The government introduced the holiday through Statutory Instrument 148 of 2026. It said the day would celebrate the country’s pre-colonial heritage and draw its name from the historic Mutapa Empire. The announcement has drawn attention because it comes as Mnangagwa signals he may remain in power beyond 2030. Critics say recent constitutional changes, including an extension of presidential terms and changes to presidential elections, could further strengthen the ruling ZANU-PF party.
