INEC Seeks UN Support to Tackle Disinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections
INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan has asked the United Nations to support efforts to combat disinformation, strengthen early-warning security monitoring and improve civic inclusion ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. He made the call during a meeting with a UN delegation in Abuja, highlighting foreign information manipulation and fake news as threats to democracy in West Africa. Amupitan said Nigeria’s voter register has reached 103 million, after INEC removed more than 1.5 million ineligible registrations. The commission is continuing its voter-register cleanup and distributing permanent voter cards to eligible voters. INEC has also reduced the number of voters assigned to each BVAS device from 1,250 to 800 and plans to hold mock accreditation and election exercises before the polls. The UN delegation said peaceful elections in Nigeria would be important for stability across the region.
