Florence Ajimobi Presents Credentials as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria
Florence Ajimobi has formally begun her diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s ambassador to Austria after presenting her letters of credence to Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. She said she would work to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, innovation and sustainable development. I have watched diplomatic accreditation ceremonies for decades. New ambassadors do not always begin work immediately after their appointment, because meetings with host presidents are usually scheduled far in advance and often held in batches. The presentation of letters of credence is the formal process through which an ambassador is recognised by the host country. It typically includes a ceremonial reception, the presentation of the letter from the sending head of state, a brief meeting and official photographs. Delays in this ceremony do not necessarily mean an ambassador has been rejected. They can simply reflect the host president’s schedule and established diplomatic protocol.
