INEC Explains Why Some Candidates Were Omitted From 2027 Governorship List
INEC says some political parties were excluded from fielding candidates in the 2027 governorship election because they did not submit their membership registers as required by the Electoral Act. The commission said the Supreme Court upheld the requirement for parties to submit membership registers between 21 April and 10 May 2026. According to the ruling, parties that failed to comply are ineligible to sponsor candidates. INEC said the final list for the presidential and National Assembly elections had already been published before the judgment. Parties that believe their governorship candidates were wrongly omitted have 14 days to notify the commission, with the deadline set for 24 October 2026.
