Mali’s Russian Base Deal Backfires Amid Rising Violence
After seizing power to escape Western influence, Mali’s military rulers turned to Russia for security support. Their agreement to host Russian bases was meant to strengthen defence against Islamist militants. Instead, when insurgents attacked the capital and other cities, Russian forces withdrew rather than protect civilians. This collapse of the so-called “shield” left Mali exposed. The fallout has been severe. Rebels, emboldened by Moscow’s retreat, intensified attacks and tragically killed Mali’s own Defence Minister. Mali now risks trading one form of outside control for another far more dangerous dependency.
