Lagos Must Match Its Trillion-Dollar Ambition With Better Everyday Services
Lagos State plans to grow its economy to nearly $1 trillion by 2052. That ambition can attract investment and create jobs, but residents must also see clear improvements in their daily lives. Reliable electricity, regular waste collection and motorable roads remain essential. Many households and small businesses still spend heavily on generators, while poor refuse evacuation, blocked drains and damaged inner roads make life more difficult. The state’s growing budget should translate into measurable results. Lagos should publish clear targets for power supply, waste collection, road repairs and drainage, while ensuring agencies and service providers are held accountable. A globally competitive Lagos must also be a city where people can move easily, live in clean neighbourhoods and run businesses without avoidable costs. Economic growth will mean more when it is felt in every community.
