Atiku’s Wealth, Intels Stake and Mambilla Claims: What the Record Shows
Atiku Abubakar’s career has spanned the Nigeria Customs Service, business and national politics. His wealth, his past interest in Intels and his years in public office have therefore attracted longstanding public scrutiny. A 2010 United States Senate investigation reviewed financial transfers linked to companies and accounts connected to Atiku and his then-wife, Jennifer Douglas. The report examined suspicious transactions, but it was not a criminal conviction. Atiku has denied wrongdoing and has not been convicted in the United States over those allegations. Questions have also been raised about possible conflicts of interest during his time as vice president and chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, while Intels operated in the port and oil logistics sector. More recently, a 2026 arbitration involving the Mambilla power project considered a $500,000 payment to Douglas. Reports on the award state that the tribunal did not find that Atiku received a bribe. The key issue is separating allegations from proven facts. Nigerians can reasonably ask how his wealth developed, how business interests were managed in office and whether conflicts were properly disclosed. The same standard should apply to every presidential contender.
