Court Ruling Invalidates ADC Leadership and Atiku Ticket; Party Accuses APC of Weakening Opposition
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says a Federal High Court judgment invalidating decisions made under David Mark’s leadership is an attempt to weaken the opposition. The ruling also invalidated the party’s May 25 presidential primary, which Atiku Abubakar won, and declared the Mark-led interim National Working Committee illegal. The court agreed with an aggrieved ADC official who argued that the leadership’s emergence breached the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act. ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi questioned the timing of the judgment, delivered a day after the party’s rally in Sokoto. He alleged that the ruling was prepared earlier and delivered in response to the rally, and said it could affect the party’s candidates at local, state and federal levels. The party also accused the APC of using judicial processes to weaken political competition. The ADC says it is awaiting a certified copy of the judgment before determining its precise terms and consequences. It plans to challenge the ruling, arguing that an earlier decision by a court of equal jurisdiction had affirmed the Mark-led leadership. The party urged its members to remain calm and law-abiding while pursuing legal options.
