NLC Says Workers Have Little to Celebrate as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence
The Nigeria Labour Congress says many Nigerians have little to celebrate as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary. The labour centre accused the Federal Government of pursuing policies that favour a small elite and foreign capital while workers face worsening hardship. The NLC said inflation has eroded the value of wages, while rising petrol prices have pushed up transport fares, food costs, rent, school fees and other essentials. It questioned why the promised benefits of subsidy removal, including improved infrastructure and social services, have not been felt by ordinary Nigerians. The Congress urged workers, trade unions and citizens to organise for policies it considers fairer, saying hope depends on collective action rather than ceremonial celebrations alone.
