Why Lagos Is Facing Poor Power Supply Beyond Ikeja Electric’s Grid Shortfall Explanation
Many parts of Lagos have experienced poor electricity supply for about three weeks. Ikeja Electric says the shortage is linked to reduced power allocated to its network from the national grid, but the disruption reflects deeper problems across Nigeria’s power sector. Electricity supply depends on generation companies, the transmission network and distribution companies working properly. Nigeria’s ageing transmission lines, substations and transformers have suffered repeated faults, while recent transmission-line trippings have further disrupted supply. Power generation has also dropped sharply, with some major plants recording little or no output. Gas shortages, driven partly by unpaid debts to gas suppliers, have limited thermal generation. Hydropower output may also be affected by low water levels and dry conditions. Nigeria has about 13,000MW of installed grid capacity, yet generation has often remained far below that level. Until generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure receive a major overhaul, Lagos residents and other consumers may continue to face unstable supply.
