Sierra Leone’s Bio Calls for Two Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa

Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio has renewed Africa’s demand for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, he said the Council’s structure still reflects the post-World War II order rather than today’s global realities. Bio noted that Africa has more than 1.6 billion people and remains central to many issues before the Security Council, yet has no permanent seat. Sierra Leone, which coordinates the African Union Committee of Ten on Security Council reform, is seeking two permanent seats and five additional non-permanent seats for African countries. He urged UN member states to make concrete progress on reform before the current General Assembly session ends. Bio argued that Africa’s meaningful inclusion is necessary for credible global decisions on peace, climate, food, energy and technology.
