Tinubu Must Respect the Constitution or Face Impeachment, Critics Argue

I believe Nigerians should demand President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s resignation or impeachment over what I see as repeated constitutional breaches. The National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, should not shield the President from accountability. I am particularly concerned about directives to channel recovered EFCC funds, unclaimed dividends and dormant-account funds to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. While supporting students is important, public money cannot be withdrawn or reassigned without lawful appropriation by the National Assembly. Section 80(2) of the 1999 Constitution provides that funds cannot be taken from the Federation’s Consolidated Revenue Fund except as authorised by the Constitution or an appropriation law. In my view, presidential directives cannot replace this constitutional requirement. The President should seek the necessary legal amendments and legislative approval for these funding plans. Nigeria must not allow executive action to weaken constitutional limits or sideline the National Assembly.
