Armed Robbers Raid Harare Orphanage, Escape with Over $30,000
Armed robbers stormed a church-run orphanage in Harare’s Westgate suburb. They overpowered security guards and spent nearly an hour ransacking administrative offices. The three gunmen forced entry into offices belonging to the director, finance, social services and human resources. They stole about $25,000 from the director’s safe, $2,500 from the human resources office and smaller sums elsewhere, totaling over $30,000. Security guards on duty were assaulted and tied up. One guard was hit with a rifle butt and bound with electrical cables. Another guard was attacked while carrying out perimeter checks. Investigators say a G3 rifle linked to a recent ambush on police officers was recovered at the scene. Residents in Westgate, Marlborough and Mabelreign have been warned about a suspected four-man gang. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police and not confront the suspects directly.
