Nine Jailed 10 Years Each for Crude Oil Theft in Akwa Ibom
A Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has sentenced nine people to 10 years’ imprisonment each for crude oil theft. Justice Joy Ikpeme found them guilty of conspiracy and tampering with an oil pipeline under the Miscellaneous Offences Act. Each convict received five years on the first count and 10 years on the second count, to run concurrently, with no option of a fine. The defendants were among 19 suspects arrested after an intelligence-led operation by the Nigerian Navy and the Department of State Services at the ASABO-D oil wellhead in Ibeno Local Government Area. The case forms part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal bunkering, protect oil revenue and limit environmental damage in host communities.
