US Begins Building 12 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters for Nigeria
Production has started on 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters ordered by Nigeria from US manufacturer Bell Textron. A Nigerian Air Force delegation visited the company’s Amarillo facility in Texas and signed the frame of the first aircraft. The helicopters are expected to strengthen the Air Force’s counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations. The AH-1Z Viper can deploy precision-guided and unguided weapons and is designed for multiple combat missions. The United States approved the proposed sale, valued at about $997 million, in 2022. The package includes 28 engines, precision-guided weapon systems, training, logistics and programme support. Production is expected to be completed in early 2029 before delivery to Nigeria.
