IGP Warns Politicians Against Vote Buying and Thuggery Ahead of 2027 Elections

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has warned politicians and their supporters against vote buying, hiring thugs, moving arms and intimidating voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a senior police officers’ conference in Owerri, Imo State, Disu said the police would act against anyone involved in electoral offences, regardless of political status. He said election security preparations must cover intelligence gathering, training, protection of electoral personnel and rapid response to violence. The IGP also directed officers to remain neutral and warned that personnel who harass voters, collude with political actors or abuse their powers would be investigated and punished. He said women, elderly voters and persons with disabilities must be protected from intimidation at polling units.
