Nigeria, West African Partners Move to Counter Terrorists’ Use of AI and Drones
Nigeria has urged West African and Sahel countries to intensify cooperation against terrorists’ use of artificial intelligence, drones, social media and virtual assets for recruitment, propaganda, financing and attacks. At a regional counterterrorism training in Abuja, the National Counter Terrorism Centre said extremist networks are increasingly using affordable digital tools to coordinate across borders. The programme brings together participants from ECOWAS, the Multinational Joint Task Force and regional intelligence bodies. Officials warned that groups including ISWAP, Boko Haram and JNIM use online platforms to recruit people, mobile money and cryptocurrencies to move funds, and drones to expand their operational reach. They called for faster intelligence sharing, stronger technical expertise and lawful systems for exchanging cyber-threat information. Nigeria is also working with the African Union Counter-Terrorism Centre to develop the NCTC into a regional centre of excellence that can support cybersecurity and counterterrorism capacity across Africa.
