Yiaga Africa Review Finds Gaps in Tinubu’s Digital Economy Drive
Two years into President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has launched ambitious plans for digital government, broadband expansion and a stronger technology ecosystem. Yiaga Africa’s assessment says progress is visible, but implementation remains uneven across the country. The report highlights gaps in rural connectivity, data collection, inter-agency coordination and citizen feedback systems. It notes that only 27% of rural local government areas have reliable connectivity, leaving many communities unable to fully benefit from digital public services. Nigeria’s startup sector has grown, with more than 12,000 registered firms and significant investment recorded. However, the report says weak institutional support, delayed tax incentives and poor budget integration could limit that growth. It calls for lower right-of-way costs, alternative power solutions, stronger local coordination and the implementation of pending digital laws. The assessment argues that success should be judged by practical improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians, not only by policies and programmes announced.
