Tinubu Orders Probe, Prosecution Over Deaths of Detainees in NSCDC Custody in Minna
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State. He said the suspects' alleged involvement in illegal mining did not remove their right to life, dignity and humane treatment. The investigation is to examine the arrests, detention conditions, number of detainees, medical care provided and the events that led to the deaths. Tinubu said any official whose abuse, negligence or failure of duty contributed to the deaths must be arrested and prosecuted. He added that suspending officers should not replace criminal accountability where evidence supports prosecution. The President directed the Ministry of Interior and NSCDC leadership to cooperate fully with investigators. He also urged calm among affected families and communities while assuring them that the government would establish the facts.
