37 Suspected Oil Thieves Die After Inhaling Toxic Fumes in Rivers

At least 37 suspected oil thieves have reportedly died after inhaling toxic fumes while loading stolen petroleum products at Okari Jetty in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. The incident reportedly happened early Thursday when a large group gathered near an illegally tapped pipeline. Some victims allegedly collapsed into the river, while others suffered severe breathing difficulties and were taken for treatment in Port Harcourt. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre said more people could still be missing, with some bodies reportedly seen floating on the river. Rivers Police Command said it has begun an investigation to establish the circumstances of the deaths. The advocacy group has called for a joint investigation of the site, stronger protection for oil facilities and alternative livelihoods for affected communities.
