Northern APC Leaders Reportedly Weigh Tinubu 2027 Support Over Wike’s Alleged 2031 Ambition
Some northern leaders in the All Progressives Congress are reportedly considering withdrawing support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid over claims that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is positioning himself for a 2031 presidential run. The leaders argue that the presidency should return to the North in 2031 under Nigeria’s informal power-sharing arrangement. They fear that backing Tinubu in 2027 could strengthen Wike’s influence across the APC and opposition parties ahead of the next succession contest. An unnamed party leader alleged that Wike’s proposed Rainbow Coalition is designed to build a cross-party network that could keep power in the South. Wike and his spokespersons had not responded to the allegations at the time of the report.
