IGP Disu Questions Citizens Recording Police Officers, Calls It Demoralising

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has questioned the limits of citizens recording police officers while they carry out official duties in public. Speaking during an engagement with Nigerian Bar Association President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, Disu said a recent court judgment had led more Nigerians to film police officers in different situations. He said officers find the practice embarrassing and demoralising, especially those working at checkpoints and in dangerous locations. The IGP clarified that the police are not opposing citizens’ right to record officers in public. However, he urged Nigerians not to turn officers into content for skits or record them indiscriminately, including while they are eating in restaurants. He invited the NBA to discuss the issue at an upcoming police symposium in Owerri.
