Akpabio Proposes NIN Verification for Tenants Before Renting Properties
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has proposed a law that could require tenants to provide valid identification, including their National Identification Number, before renting houses, shops, apartments or short-let properties. The proposal was discussed during Senate proceedings on October 27, 2026, while lawmakers considered measures against human trafficking, slavery and other human rights abuses. Akpabio said landlords should verify tenants’ identities so security agencies can more easily trace suspects when crimes occur. He asked Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to begin work on the proposed legislation, with the Federal Capital Territory identified as an initial focus. The proposal is not yet law, and any final requirements will depend on the bill eventually passed by the National Assembly.
