Wahab Defends Lagos Flood-Control Efforts, Cites Coastal and Climate Challenges
Lagos Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab has defended the state government’s handling of flooding after criticism from former Labour Party governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. Wahab said Lagos’ coastal location, tidal conditions and worsening climate change mean drainage systems cannot completely prevent flash flooding. He argued that flood management should be judged by how well authorities reduce risks and protect residents. He listed drainage upgrades, pump stations, year-round clearing of drainage channels, flood-abatement operations, wetland protection and the removal of structures on floodplains as measures taken by the state. He also cited restrictions on styrofoam and single-use plastics. The commissioner said the interventions had reduced flooding incidents by 75 to 80 per cent, though he did not provide supporting data in the statement. He urged critics to weigh the government’s actions alongside Lagos’ environmental realities.
