ABU Engineering Students Build Smart Walking Aid for Nigerians With Vision Loss

A team of 300-level engineering students at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has developed an electronic walking aid to help visually impaired people move around more safely. The device detects obstacles such as people, holes and water. It alerts users through distinct sounds and hand vibrations, helping them recognise hazards in their path. The students say they hope to add artificial intelligence and a camera to future versions. The upgrade could identify obstacles more specifically and relay information to the user through an audio earpiece. The innovation addresses a major accessibility need. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 24 million Nigerians were living with vision loss in 2020, including 1.3 million people who were blind.
