Obi, Atiku and 2027: How Can Nigerians Hold Campaign Promises Accountable?
As the 2027 election approaches, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are again presenting plans to address hardship, insecurity, unemployment, inflation and the cost of living. Their proposals deserve public debate, but Nigerians should demand more than broad promises. Every candidate should explain the cost of each major policy, its funding source, the laws that may need to change, the implementation timeline and the officials responsible for delivery. Promises on jobs, power, food prices, security and restructuring should come with measurable targets. This standard should apply equally to Obi, Atiku, Tinubu and every other presidential candidate. A manifesto should be treated as a contract with voters, not a motivational speech. Nigerians need clear deadlines, public records and consequences for failure. Campaigning is easy; governing is the real test.
