Bashir Ahmad Urges OPay to Reconsider Student’s Arrest Over False Shutdown Post
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has appealed to OPay to reconsider the arrest of Haifa Abubakar, a student accused of circulating a false notice claiming the fintech company had shut down. Ahmad said Abubakar allegedly deleted the viral post and apologised after OPay requested corrective action. He questioned why she was still arrested if she had complied, while stressing that her original post was wrong. The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre said Abubakar was arrested on September 4, 2026, after investigators traced the false notice to an X account linked to her. Ahmad urged OPay to show compassion and allow the matter to serve as a lesson rather than derail the student’s future.
