Police Probe Death at Obudu Market as Community Demands ₦300,000 Cleansing Fee
A 56-year-old shoemaker, identified as Anthony, was found dead at Obudu Main Market Square in Cross River State on Sunday, August 23, 2026. He was reportedly from Bekwarra Local Government Area. Residents said the incident has left the community shocked. The market was reportedly shut after the death, while community members allegedly asked the man’s family to pay ₦300,000 for a cleansing ritual before it can reopen. The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident and said officers visited the scene, documented it and moved the body to a mortuary. Police say an investigation is underway to establish the cause of death and rule out foul play.
