Why Young Nigerians Are Losing Faith in Politics
Nigeria has a large young population, but many young people increasingly doubt that politics can improve their lives. For them, the key questions are immediate: Can they find work, afford food and rent, run a business, and build a future at home? The Federal Government says its economic reforms are necessary for long-term recovery. Yet surveys cited in this discussion show deep concern among young Nigerians about inflation, unemployment, living conditions and the direction of the country. Many have also considered leaving Nigeria because of economic hardship and limited opportunities. Political disengagement is a serious risk. When young people stop trusting parties, promises and elections, they may withdraw from voting, turn only to online activism, protest, or emigrate. Democracy suffers when citizens no longer believe participation can produce change. Young Nigerians should continue demanding measurable promises and accountability. The Tinubu administration, in turn, must translate reform promises into visible improvements in jobs, purchasing power, infrastructure and opportunity before 2027.
