Police Investigate Death of Kogi Teacher Assaulted Over Pupil Discipline
The Kogi State Police have opened an inquiry into the death of 30-year-old primary school teacher Maryam Usman after she was attacked for disciplining a pupil. On June 18, the student fell and injured his arm during punishment at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka. His father, Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly forced their way into Maryam’s home and beat her. Sources say Maryam was later assaulted again while walking to the mosque. She was treated at a local hospital, referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo, and died on June 25. Police registered a culpable homicide case at Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25. Investigators visited the scene and her residence. The body will be conveyed to General Hospital, Ankpa for autopsy before the case is passed to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
