Nigeria’s Public Debt Hits ₦166.79tn as FG Seeks $1.5bn in New World Bank Loans
Nigeria’s total public debt rose to ₦166.79tn at the end of June 2026, according to Debt Management Office figures. The Federal Government is also discussing three proposed World Bank facilities worth a combined $1.5bn, though they have not received final approval. The proposed loans include $500m in additional funding for the ACReSAL climate-resilience programme, which operates in 19 northern states and the FCT. The funding would support land restoration, flood control, irrigation, water storage and other climate-resilient projects. A further $500m is proposed for social protection programmes, including cash transfers for poor and vulnerable households and improvements to the national social register. The third $500m facility would support early childhood services, including health, nutrition, learning, childcare, water and sanitation, across the country. Domestic debt stood at ₦91.59tn, while external debt was ₦75.20tn. Nigeria’s outstanding World Bank Group debt reached $20.73bn by the end of June, accounting for about 38 percent of the country’s external debt stock.
