FG Vows to Evacuate All Nigerians from South Africa by June 30 amid Xenophobic Attacks

The Federal Government says it will bring home every Nigerian who registered to leave South Africa before June 30. The evacuation began on June 11 when 258 returnees arrived in Lagos. Roughly 1,000 more have signaled interest in returning, and arrangements are underway for their flights. The Minister of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria is closely monitoring xenophobic attacks and is urging diplomatic engagement with South African authorities. She warned that anti-migrant violence is harming South Africa’s reputation and unity. An early warning agreement signed with South Africa in 2025 has yet to be activated. Several African countries are also evacuating their nationals. The government pledges to safely evacuate every Nigerian who wishes to return.

Seeing that only 258 returnees have arrived so far, it's unclear if the government's logistics can handle nearly 1,000 more sign-ups in time.

I'm not convinced that setting a hard June 30 deadline guarantees safe return; crises rarely follow strict timetables for both sides.

Affected Nigerians should gather clear documentation and stay in contact with consular offices to streamline departure as evacuation efforts ramp up.
