Cape Town Rainbow Crossing Vandalised Twice in Days With Religious Graffiti
Cape Town’s rainbow pedestrian crossing in Green Point was vandalised twice within days, with religious messages painted over the LGBTQ+ landmark. The first incident left black marks and the word “Jesus” across the crossing. City workers began repairs, but a shortage of specialist colours meant it was temporarily repainted pink. The pink surface was then targeted again with graffiti referencing a Bible passage and declaring “Jesus is Lord”. A man was reportedly arrested in connection with the second incident, although authorities have not confirmed further details. Installed in 2022, the crossing has been a visible symbol of LGBTQ+ inclusion in Cape Town. The city says the original rainbow design will be restored once the required paint arrives.
