Tinubu Signs Ports Economic Regulatory Agency Act Into Law

Tinubu Signs Ports Economic Regulatory Agency Act Into Law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency Act, 2026, giving the Nigerian Shippers’ Council a stronger legal mandate to regulate the country’s port economy. The new law empowers the regulator to oversee port tariffs, rates, charges, competition and the licensing of service providers. It also provides a legal framework for resolving commercial disputes within the port sector. Maritime stakeholders say the law could strengthen accountability among port operators. However, some have called for clear boundaries between the new agency, the Nigerian Ports Authority and NIMASA to prevent overlapping responsibilities.
