Hamzat, Oshiomhole and Shekarau Urge Nigerians to Put Citizenship Above Ethnic Divisions
Lagos Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, Senator Adams Oshiomhole and former Kano Governor Ibrahim Shekarau have called for a stronger Nigerian identity that rises above ethnic, religious and regional differences. Speaking at the 7th National Discourse at the University of Lagos, Hamzat said Nigeria must accommodate its many identities without allowing them to weaken national unity. He urged greater religious tolerance and the preservation of cultural heritage within a shared national identity. Oshiomhole said leadership should be based on competence, ideas and values rather than ethnicity, religion or place of birth. He warned against political elites using ethnic and religious sentiments to escape accountability. Shekarau and other speakers also urged fairness, consultation and respect for differing views, arguing that citizens must be empowered to participate in governance regardless of their background.
