US Researcher Seeks Full Release of 1990s Records Mentioning Tinubu in FOIA Case

American transparency researcher Aaron Greenspan has asked a Washington, D.C., federal court to compel the FBI, DEA and Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys to release unredacted records from a 1990s narcotics investigation. His Freedom of Information Act case concerns records he says mention President Bola Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele. Greenspan argues that documents from a 1993 civil forfeiture case and related proceedings show that Tinubu was publicly identified in connection with the investigation. He says the agencies have released thousands of pages but none containing Tinubu's name, and that they can no longer refuse to confirm whether further records exist. The filing cites a 1993 civil forfeiture order involving funds held in accounts linked to Tinubu. It also acknowledges that the proceeding was civil and did not amount to a criminal conviction against Tinubu. The court has not found Tinubu criminally liable in the matter. The dispute remains before the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The agencies and Tinubu's legal representatives are contesting whether privacy exemptions allow further records to be withheld or redacted.
