Why Did Senator Ned Nwoko Opt for Anim-Oma State Over Anioma State?

There was a proposal to merge the Anioma and Orlu state creation movements into a single Anim-Oma State with Orlu as the capital. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu convened South-East stakeholders to combine Senator Ned Nwoko’s Anioma campaign and Senator Osita Izunaso’s Anim State group. The new state would cover Anioma in Delta, the old Orlu zone in Imo, and Ihiala in Anambra. The Anioma delegation reportedly agreed to cede Asaba as capital in favour of Orlu. This decision, affirmed by Senator Nwoko, drew strong opposition from Delta legislators and traditional rulers who want the capital to stay in the South-South zone. Although Imo State has begun building a government house in Orlu, the plan still needs constitutional approval from two-thirds of elected representatives and a national referendum. Many now wonder: is Senator Nwoko actually from Delta North?

It seems merging Anioma and Orlu movements into Anim-Oma avoids taking a clear stance on local identity priorities in both regions.

I'm not convinced this merger genuinely reflects stakeholder wishes rather than a political compromise imposed from above.

Stakeholders should publish detailed plans outlining administrative structures and resource allocations to ensure the proposed Anim-Oma State truly benefits both Anioma and Orlu residents.
